I was originally planning to take some of these third party blocklists I've found (plus the list of IP's blocked by simplewall) and essentially just start researching each one, line by line, but based on what you're saying it seems like that would be a massive (almost impossible) undertaking, especially for someone who doesn't have high technical knowledge. I'm thinking tinywall or even the built-in windows firewall would be better for me. I want to avoid buginess as much as possible since I don't trust myself to be able to fix bugs. It doesn't seem to be open source, but that isn't always a dealbreaker for me depending on the circumstances. Those are some red flags - I haven't checked out tinywall, but plan to now. I remember someone saying how bad programmer the guy was too and his attitude is weird, but anyway. What I don't like about Simplewall is how buggy some updates can be and some weird behaviors of Simplewall and how the developer decided to take Blacklist mode off and now you can only do whitelisting which is nice for me but not for people who only want to block an app if necessary but don't want to block the entire internet. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me. I don't want to start playing around with third party blocklists in Simplewall if doing so could cause damage/dysfunction that's very difficult to reverse. My biggest fear with using something like ShutUp10 is that it could screw up my system to the point that I need to reinstall windows - I've read accounts from people saying that's exactly what happened to them (they enabled a bunch of settings, started experiencing some buginess, and one major update later, everything was irreparably messed up). If I block things using a firewall - be that IP addresses or DNS addresses (someone else just told me that Simplewall is actually a DNS resolver too) - and my system starts acting weird, does simply un-blocking those things restore my system to its original functionality, with no long-term consequences? ![]() ![]() I'm on the fence about the other two, because I haven't used this firewall long enough to tell if those blocklists could also break security updates (disabling all three kind of defeats the purpose though). All are blocked by default but I unblocked Update Servers because I don't want to break automatic security updates. At this point, I'm using it with the default blocklists only - there are three, (1) Microsoft update servers, (2) Microsoft spying and telemetry servers, and (3) Microsoft application servers. I recently downloaded Simplewall because I've seen it recommended so much. I'm tempted to agree - I've been doing some research and it really does seem like the risk of messing up your system with one of these tools is pretty high. "I don't have anything to hide but I don't have anything I want to show you either" W10Privacy is certainly no programming masterpiece, but meets my envisaged purpose.Dedicated to the intersection of technology, privacy, and freedom in the digital world. The program will be expanded gradually, if possible and available, with the corresponding Windows 8.1 features in the future. The primary focus is on settings for Windows 10 and its apps (for example the new browser "Edge"). The program should therefore be a help, to display the available settings relatively clearly and to set the desired options if necessary. Microsoft generously enables everybody to change the concerning settings, but hides them in countless menus, where a normal user does not want to search for! The by default highly questionable set options concerning privacy and data protection in Windows 10 brought me to the idea to develop this program. ![]() ![]() Simple and effective is the W10Privacy program recommeded on Privacytools.io page:
